Carbon Footprint

(CARBON FOOTPRINT)

Nowadays, there are numerous packaging products that have been designed concerning the waste reduction and global warming crisis. But how can we know that which packaging products can save our world better? One of the potential indicators is “Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emission or carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent”, which is also known as “Carbon Footprint”.

Carbon Footprint indicates the total amount of greenhouse gases that are emitted during all activities of product’s lifecycle. The net emission shows as kgCO2eq.

The life cycle assessment (LCA), defined in ISO 14040 and ISO 14044, is a cradle-to-grave assessment of any product over its lifetime from utilization of raw material, manufacturing, usage, transportation, and end-of-life management.

Let’s consider the LCA of coconut fiber pot and common plastic pot, the coconut fiber pot is made of the renewable natural resources through the low pollution and simple process, and it can be disposed and bio-decomposed in landfill. As we can see, during its life cycle the coconut fiber pot emits very small amount of greenhouse gases. In contrast, the plastic pot is made from the distillation of non-renewable crude petroleum oil at high temperature (140-180℃) to obtain naphtha, which is the raw material for polymerization to produce the plastic pellets.

We can save our world easily by just changing our behavior by using the environmentally friendly products likes coconut fiber pot or other natural products such as bamboo straw, Rapoo straw, and betal palm plate.
